The MACD indicator: reading trend and momentum
MACD reads trend and momentum from the gap between a short and a long moving average. It usually signals before moving averages do and handles trends better than most oscillators.

Crossovers
MACD rising through the signal line is a buy signal, falling through it a sell signal. A bullish cross below zero only says the fall is slowing; the uptrend is confirmed when MACD moves above zero.
The zero line
Above zero the short average is above the long one and buyers lead. Decide direction with the zero line and time entries with crossovers.
The histogram
The bars show the distance between the lines. Shrinking bars warn of fading momentum before the lines cross; growing bars show momentum building.
Divergence
Price making a lower low while MACD makes a higher low shows selling pressure easing. As with RSI divergence, use it as one input, not the only one.
Why it looks different in MT4 and MT5
The built-in MACD in MT4 and MT5 draws the MACD line as bars and the signal as a line, unlike the two-lines-and-histogram style elsewhere. The logic does not change: bars rising through the signal line is the bullish cross.
When MACD struggles
- Sideways markets: frequent, failing crosses.
- Sudden news: built on averages, it lags.
- Very small timeframes: lost in noise.

Start with the defaults; most traders watch them. Test any change on past data first.
How do I combine MACD with RSI?
MACD for trend and momentum, RSI for stretch. MACD above zero with RSI dipping to about 50 and turning up is a pullback buy candidate.
Which timeframe gives clearer MACD signals?
Higher ones give fewer, cleaner signals. Set direction on the 4-hour or daily and time entries on the 1-hour.
